Total Disablement

Total disablement can be a catastrophic event that creates substantial financial cost and loss of income. Especially because the disabled person still generates living expenses, but may not be able to earn an income in the future. Statistics tell us that for every death in our country, 17 people will become disabled to the point where they can't work*.

Total Disablement Cover pays a lump sum if you are totally or permanently disabled due to illness or accident. The sum can be used for any purpose, but it is particularly useful for eliminating or reducing debt and replacing future income loss.

How much do I need?

Total Disablement cover can be used to take care of debt, to provide for family and to cover lifestyle adjustment costs (like home alterations etc). The actual amount of cover that's right for you, or in fact whether you need it at all, will come down to your own personal situation. It is important to discuss with your adviser how total disablement would have an impact on your finances and lifestyle.

What type of plan is the best one for me?

Total Disablement, total and permanent disability, permanent disability, TPD are some of the various names for this cover. And there are about as many different types of plans as there are names. There is accelerated cover, which means it will come off your life insurance; or stand alone cover, which means it will pay out separately to any other insurance you have. Some Trauma plans add Total Disablement as another listed condition; some plans even do this for free. Total Disablement can sometimes be an additional benefit attached to other covers such as Income Cover and Mortgage Protection. With so many options to consider, it is wise to speak with an expert. Your adviser can help.
